I have started reading The Hobbit and have been enjoying it. I started reading this book due to my dad because its one of his favorite books. It is written by J.R.R. Tolkien and is the prelude to the popular series The Lord of the Rings. First off, I love all the songs that have been added into the story (some of them are quite clever). I have seen the cartoon version of The Hobbit so as I've been reading I've been comparing the similarities and differences between the two.
Right now I am at the part where Bilbo and the dwarves have just escaped the woodelves and now are in the company of the Lakemen. They escaped by traveling down the river in empty wine barrels. I think it is a good book because it has an unlikely hero, but he overcomes his fears to help his friends on their quest to the regain their lost treasure.
I think that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the book because that was what he enjoyed doing. One of the quote that I found most interesting was "May the hair on your toes never fall out." It just seemed like an odd thing to say to someone. It showed how the dwarves started to respect Bilbo rather than think him useless.
I wonder how the dwarves and Bilbo will manage to get their treasure from the dragon on the mountain. I also wonder how the author came up with all the strange names for all the characters. I think J.R.R. Tolkien came up with some great characters. I always feel bad for poor Bomber, the over-weight dwarf, who always is either last or finds he has to be the one to carry little Bilbo! This is a really good book and I can't wait to see how it ends!
